What is GOTS Certification?

Have you noticed the logo above appearing on more and more yarn labels? Do you know what it means?

GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard, which is a certification program for textiles made from organic fibers. This certification ensures that the entire textile supply chain, from farming to processing and distribution, meets strict environmental and social criteria.

To be certified, all stages of the supply chain must meet GOTS standards and criteria, including:

  1. Organic Fiber Production: The raw materials used in the product must be produced organically, without the use of pesticides, herbicides or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

  2. Environmental and Social Criteria: As mentioned above, the entire supply chain must meet strict environmental and social criteria, which includes fair labor practices, no child labor, and safe working conditions for all workers.

  3. Processing and Manufacturing: The textile product must be processed and manufactured without the use of toxic chemicals, heavy metals, or any substances that are harmful to the environment or to human health.

The GOTS certification is recognized globally as the leading standard for organic textiles, and it provides consumers with assurance that the product they are buying is made in an environmentally and socially responsible way. The certification is issued by independent certification bodies that are accredited by the Global Organic Textile Standard.

I'm a fan of this and am working to expand the variety of yarns Unraveled stocks which carry this certification.

These are the yarns we currently stock which carry this certification:
